IndiBlogger Weekly Diary | Edition 8

Welcome one and all as we take you through the happenings on IndiBlogger for yet another week! A lot of things have happened this week including some development on the IndiBlogger website, the first IndiBlogger event of the year and the introduction of a new team member!

Will the real IndiName please stand up?

Ok, first thing’s first, how many of you tried to take “Batman” as your IndiName? :-D.

We decided to get out of “numbering” people and let people choose how they wanted their URL to be. We feel that this will help us drive more readers to your blog! It makes promoting and referencing of your blog easier too! However, I have always enjoyed anonymity of a number more than a name. Having said that, the new URLs do give our profiles on IndiBlogger a more polished look and better branding to individual bloggers. We would love to hear your theory behind choosing your IndiName; so comment away!

Another new feature is on the IndiBlogger home page where we can now see top posts from different categories. An update : I had previously mentioned top posts badges would be given to all categories but NO, the top posts will be given only for the popular blog posts of the day.

IndiSpire

We received a very interesting tweet from Oreejit where he  gave the suggestion that IndiSpire should cater to all categories. I think that is a wonderful idea. I realize that blogging isn’t really about the number of visitors who flock to your site. It’s more about the varied content and topics that affect people’s life every day in every way. I also agree with Oreejit about most of the topics on IndiSpire being about love and such. These topics definitely have a large audience but do not interest all the audience. I find this feedback really important. Agree or disagree? We will know by the upcoming IndiSpire topics soon ;) Or you could just share your opinion here.

IndiVine Contest

The Garnier campaign closed this week with 435 entries. (God bless those who will be judging these posts!) Not long ago, a Garnier campaign on IndiBlogger was won by Pallavi; who got the chance to meet Deepika Padukone as the prize! Here’s a pic of her with the actor:

The New Guy in the IndiTeam

A drum roll of a welcome for our new talented recruit, Jesuwin! He has spent most of his years in Dubai and a few in India when he was pursuing his Masters in Strategic Marketing; making him a great asset for IndiBlogger. His creative ideas and analytical skills are sure to contribute to our success in the years to come.  He can sing, play guitar, smash the bloody drums, paint and doodle! And NO, we don’t go out there looking for these types but hey, they seem to find us :-D

You can check out one of his tracks on sound cloud and you can even show him some love in the comments below..

And this is Vineet Rajan grooving to the song and Renie giving him a stink eye look that says, WTF??.

An unforgettable event:

Scan 3

The first event of the IndiBlogger year happened this weekend. It was like the old days. A full house with a relaxed bunch of bloggers! Some from the days of yore and many were new to IndiBlogger events. A great mix of people, lots of laughs and I don’t think anyone wanted to leave.

Jesuwin had a “Light Bulb” moment at the event. Here is what transpired when David Chu the product manager for Asus was addressing the crowd:

David Chu – Here is the new Asus phone (Shows a phone to the audience)

Jesuwin – Hey! That looks like my phone!

David Chu – This is the Zenfone

Jesuwin – Really? My phone is called the Zenfone? (Looks at the back of his phone)

David Chu – It runs on Android

Jesuwin – Really?? Android?? I thought my phone ran on WhatsApp!

After everyone rolled on the floor laughing, we decided to add a couple more items to his training agenda :-D

The bloggers also did skits promoting blogging. Some really great moments there. It’s amazing to see how people who don’t know anything about each other get together and really work their heart out. Their only common denominator is blogging. Heart warming stuff! You can see all of the photos here!

Here  are the winners to last weeks question of the week!

Shruti Salman Urshita Shameem Arpita

Note:- We have shipped the pending prizes for last three weeks so keep a look out for them in your mail box :-)

This weeks question:

Tell us about your experience of meeting a blogger or bloggers. With an example or two, tell us specific instances of what made meeting a blogger so special and you can win exclusive Blog Now Live Forever magnets!

Until next time, keep blogging!

Logistically speaking..

I had recently written a post on my personal blog about how it was to be on this side of IndiBlogger. However, it did not include anything about what I did here. (Sometimes I wonder about exactly what I do here and invariably it leads me to watching cute baby videos on Youtube so I could take my mind off it!)

When I joined this company as a PR freelancer, I was fresh out of college with zero experience. The very generous team at IndiBlogger let me work for them, travel with them, be part of team discussions; even allowed me to make mistakes and believe it or not, paid me to simply learn on the job. I got away with a lot of PR goof-ups in the early days and it was merely because the team, at that time, didn’t understand what PR is (Nihal still doesn’t). The bad thing was, at that point, I didn’t understand PR either. Working for IndiBlogger gave me the hands-on experience in the field and for that, I will always be grateful!

Then one day, Renie called me. It was a casual chat when he mentioned to me that he thought I could handle some more work (other than goofing off in the name of PR) in the company. His exact words were, “Just help us a little with responding to a few support tickets that we get sometimes.”

It obviously seemed easy!

And hence, (I would like to believe because of my ‘public relation skills’), I was also made responsible for attending to logistical issues with regards to prizes, vouchers, hampers, coupons, t shirts, pen drives, toothpaste, toothbrush, and whathaveyou.

Let me be honest. When I was growing up, I never once thought or imagined or dreamed to work as that girl who would respond to issues pertaining to a courier lost on its way to a village in Kerala, problems with redeeming a prize by a blogger who is currently in Kenya or a blogger in a little town outside Banaras who did not receive a shopping voucher!

When it dawned on me what I had gotten myself into, all I could think was, “Holy mother of god!”

In the last two years, I have had to respond to so many queries regarding loss (of couriers) that sometimes it’s hard to go to bed with a calm mind. I often imagine myself as Amy Adams’ character, Julie, in the film Julie and Julia; the part where Julie is in a job which entails that she respond to phone calls from people complaining about the government and its public development schemes.

A distraught Amy Adams in the film Julie & Julia

A distraught Amy Adams in the film Julie & Julia

At first it was confusing and frustrating and annoying and endless. I had no idea why WeSuck courier service would not deliver to a certain location or why WeAreThieves courier service tends to lose couriers without a trace!

With time I got better at managing these issues and then it wasn’t that ba… err someone just received a damaged shampoo bottle and I am now wondering what I can possibly do to make up for spilled shampoo!

So it doesn’t quite end. The problems are sometimes funny, sometimes manageable, sometimes out of control and mostly not-my-fault.

But bloggers have been really cooperative through all of this. And sometimes, when one of them says thank you or a word of appreciation, I am not sure how, but it all seems worth the entire ordeal.

And then there are times when I have upset some bloggers by my inability to provide a satisfactory solution to a logistical issue. Frustrated with my response, they write to Renie! I take this opportunity to clarify that those mails get forwarded to me again; and eventually it’s me who will still be your point of contact for all things logistics (Bwahahah).

Look forward to talking to you soon (hopefully not through a support ticket!)

The IndiBlogger Team

This is an excerpt from Mumbai IndiBlogger Meet 2010.

Naveen Roy Naveen Roy (aka “shit happens!”)

The man who was there at the beginning, and the man we hope will be there at the end. Commitments of an extraordinary nature have kept him from IndiBlogger for a while now; but we’ll never forget that he’s the one who taught us what blogging was all about in the first place! Only recently realized that Saturdays are just as bad as Mondays.

Anwin Joselyn Anwin Joselyn (aka “The Fish Molester”)

The man who once said – “blogging is the next big thing in India” and started the whole conversation which led to IndiBlogger.in being what it is today. He’s the guy behind the scenes, the one who puts ideas in people’s heads before sitting back to watch what unfolds. He only recently realized that the handlebars on his Royal Enfield were the most atrocious things Bangalore has ever seen.

Diana (aka the Gate-Keeper)

Our super strict moderator. Everything on IndiBlogger, right from the forum to IndiRank to IndiVine, hinges on what she does; she religiously moderates over a hundred blogs everyday to see if it complies with all our guidelines.  She still hasn’t realized how much power she has in her hands. Let’s hope she never does. :-)

Nafisa Patel

Our event manager who has nothing to say on twitter ’cause she’s too good for the rest of the world. She’s the one who makes the very, very detailed lists on Google docs before every blogger meet, ensuring everybody gets their jobs done on time. She even calls bloggers to make sure they land up on time! Without her, #indimum would have been a lost cause. She only just realized that fish tend to die without food, even if you talk to them everyday.

Anoop Johnson (aka “Where’s my drink?”)

I’ve known him for far too long to say anything that can be publicly said – expect that he has a nose like a bloodhound and the memory of an elephant. He knows what’s going wrong, long before it becomes apparent to everyone else; and he can recall embarrassing stories about your childhood you blocked out a long time ago. He only recently realized that you never, ever walk out into the middle of a party leaving your pants behind.

Karthik DR Karthik DR

You never know what’s going on behind those glasses. He can juggle multiple clients, women and a million other woes in one hand while drinking rum with the other. Reliable as a rock and accepts no praise. Still hasn’t realized that those Nunchucks he carries around everywhere will never be used except in his fantasies.

Balaganesh Balaganesh (BG)

Always out to prove himself – BG’s the one who will quietly do his thing and lo-and-behold, a few trips later, the job is done; He’s handled the media coverage of IndiBlogger since our very first blogger meet, and the results speak for themselves. Still hasn’t realized that there are some things you just should not roll on an airplane!

Vineet Rajan Vineet (aka “Pappu Pager” and “Sir-Craps-A-Lot”)

Vineet was the blogger who made our Pune Blogger Meet possible. The video he made, dedicated to the blogger in all of us, speaks for the passion he has for blogging and IndiBlogger. He now represents IndiBlogger in Mumbai.  His offer letter was a bottle of whiskey at Bangalore – and thanks to him, we’ve been able to pull off  this great meet at Mumbai. He still hasn’t figured out how to get the point across in 50,000 words or less.

Rashmi DP Rashmi Devaprasath (aka “Goms”)

The queen of logistics. If it was not for her (and her OCD) , we would have been running around like headless chickens all through the blogger meet. We really didn’t have much to do except for manual labor, which she graciously allowed us to do. She calls bloggers and tells them what shoes to wear to a blogger meet, and she’s still wondering how many threads there are on the carpet at Sea Princess.

Edin Edin Joselyn (aka “Eddie”)

The man who once said “Blogging is boring” – and he’s been paying for it ever since. This newbie blogger is patient, persistent and provides our development team with good Single Malt like a good little soldier. Watch out for him ’cause he’s an upcoming star in the IndiBlogger ranks. Only just realized that Gul probably remembers him as “Coffee Boy”! :-)

Shilpa Rathnam Shilpa Rathnam (aka “Umpa Lumpa”)

The one who is very, very picky about whom she follows on twitter, Shilpa is that little extra ingredient that’s needed at every event. Sharp as a tack, yet insane as a cuckoo clock, she keeps things ticking away with the sound of her voice. She only just realized that there is at least one person in this world who doesn’t want to be hugged by a Shilpa.

Nandita Thomas Nandita Thomas (aka Nanny)

The good sport; the go-to person when you need something done, no matter how crazy it is. She would watch the proceedings behind those half-closed eyes and yet know what’s going on better than most of us. #indimum was her first blogger meet, and we hope it’s not her last. Only just realized that airplanes tend to take off even if you’re not on it.

Simi Simi Balaganesh

The one you cannot photograph without a smile on her face; this may have been her first blogger meet but you wouldn’t have known that if I hadn’t told you so. She can say something that makes you feel good about yourself; 5 minutes later you’ll realize that she was kicking your sorry behind. She only just realized that we all do something other than drinking!

Renie Ravin A personal note

I shut down my first venture in 2004 when I realized that I could do very little by myself.  Three years later, I realized that everything I was looking for has been prancing around in front of me for more than 20 years. It’s a rare occurrence when you can make a “startup” work – it’s a 1000 times more valuable when you can achieve it with people you’ve known since you learnt how to ride a bicycle.

Vineet Rajan to run our new office at Mumbai

Remember we said we have another announcement to make in 2010? Vineet Rajan, was the hero behind our well received blogger meet at Pune in March 2008. Vineet is moving out of his job at HP, Hyderabad to open our office at Mumbai – yes, that means we’ll have a lot more activity for bloggers at Mumbai! :-)

Here’s Vineet (aka Pappu Pager), with an Ubuntu logo proudly displayed at a Microsoft – sponsored meet:

We guess we really got to know Vineet after the blogger meet, in some dark smoky pub at Pune. He even took a bus from Hyderabad to Bangalore to join us at the pre- Iron Maiden Kingfisher Heavy Metal Blogger Meet, even though he wasn’t going to the concert!

The halo always appears when Vineet is photographed after a few beers:

You can read more about Vineet here.

Needless to say, we’re delighted to have someone of Vineet’s caliber on our team, and we’re sure he’s going to be an instrumental part of IndiBlogger’s future. Welcome aboard, Vineet!

Vineet

I decided promotions and appraisals are not for me. I like to describe myself as “Half crazy, half sane. I like chicken and would probably marry one. They don’t cry and they don’t crib when you get drunk”.

That pretty much sums up what I am. Oh one more thing, I am the sales guy who also blogs!

Born in Chennai, and then it leads to a confusing discussion on where I am actually from.

I’ll be based out of Mumbai! See you there and everywhere online! You can follow the links below to know more.

What the hell am I doing for IndiBlogger?

IndiBlogger.in being a community of Indian blogs and bloggers we realize that we are for the community. And we being bloggers for many years (we have 25+ man years behind us in blogging) it was necessary for at least one dedicated member of the team to work with different online and offline communities in India (blogging, tweeting, etc).

So that is me. I look after or try my best to interact with other online communities and IndiBlogger.in and find out ways how we can best partner with each other.

What the hell am I passionate about?

Needless to say, I am passionate about blogging. Yay! My other passions include my 1986 model Enfield Bullet Standard, reading novels (I read everyday), listening to music (everyday), keeping ornamental fishes (I love Siamese Fighting fish), and traveling.

Where the hell did I pop up from?

Originally from Nagercoil (Kanyakumari District) and have made Bangalore my temporary abode for peace (who am I kidding), parties, fun and work. For people who do not know too much about Nagercoil – it is a beautiful place with rolling mountains, secret and not-so-secret water basins (ponds, lakes, streams, rivers, waterfalls, dams, etc.), different types of forests, a rich and varied wildlife, and much more.

Enough!!! Where the hell can you substantiate what I have claimed above?

http://anw.in/ – My personal blog where I blog about IndiBlogger meets, blogging tutorials, pictures, trips, concerts, books, myself, etc.

http://awesomefotos.com/ – A photo blog where none of my pictures are showcased. Nevertheless, I love the blog.

How the hell can you connect with me?

And so it begins…

Who are we?
A bunch of bloggers who believe that the Indian Blogging community is much larger, deeper and more active than people know.

So what’s the plan?
Give everyone a place where they can find each other – on the IndiBlogger directory.

What’s with the badges?
Wouldn’t you feel lost if you didn’t belong to a country? Your blog feels the same way too. Give it an identity.

Why IndiBlogger?
To be honest, it was more of a “why not” than a “why”? However, as we built our idea, it started to make sense. And here we are.
